A bit of Black and White

30th April 2021 - Customer location: Brisbane

Six Shooter Cylinder ring. Oxidised silver.

I just finished two very unique rings for a Brisbane customer. The design choices were not unexpected from him as back in 2019 he commissioned me to make a feather ring. The Six Shooter Cylinder ring above is one of the two new rings and is a really good example of why I make sure that the size is right before I make rings.

There are two main methods to make a ring a larger finger size. One is to cut it and put a piece in but with rings like this that have sectioned patterns all the way around that is not possible.

The ring splitting in the thin section During stretching.

The second method is to stretch the ring. Above is what happens when you stretch a ring like this. The ring will split at the thinner sections before the thicker sections will expand. The ring is 3mm thick in the heaviest sections.

I did this intentionally to a draft of this ring that I will melt down later anyway. I wanted to show the customer how important it was to get the size right before making the actual ring. I also planned to write this article to send to those that think any ring can be resized :)

There is one final way to make a ring like this a bigger finger size and that is to shave metal from the inside. With the lip on this ring design that would make the edge very fine.

Tarzali Lakes, 25th June 2021.

Before I go the place I want to share from My World this week is a privately owned nature reserve that has Platypus. The Australian Platypus Park at Tarzali Lakes has a wonderful restaurant with homemade food and for a small fee of $7 you can also go down to the Lakes to see if the Platypus are out and about. If you do not see a Platypus you do not have to pay.

A business like this that depends so heavily on tourists really needs our support to survive. I visited there last week and you can see some other photos of the Platypus I got to spend some time with in this blog post.
