One month, 10000klms travelled on a bike, living out of a tent...so good.

18th May 2025

Dawn at Vivonne Bay, Kangaroo Island, SA.

I am back in Cairns now after a month of travel on my motorbike “Himi”. My wife leaves for an overseas trip in the next few days so I came back a little earlier to see her. Thought I would write a quick post to let you know what is to come.

Swincer Rocks, Yorke Peninsula, SA.

After a stop over at Adelaide to catch up with my Father my next major destination was the Yorke Peninsula. For three days I camped at Swincer Rocks and loved it.

After my three days at Swincer Rocks I moved camp to Hillocks Drive on the other side of the Yorke Peninsula. Hillocks Drive was the highlight of the trip and I cannot wait to go back and to also take my wife.

Also known as Butler’s Beach, it is about 5klms of private farmland that you can camp on for very reasonable rates. So much more to come about this spectacular place in future posts.

During my over 10000 kilometres of travels I enjoyed endless glorious sunrises and sunsets. I soon got into a routine of being asleep in my tent soon after sunset and up at sunrise with the birds.

Sunrise at Vivonne Bay, Kangaroo Island, SA.

After my time on the Yorke Peninsula I headed back to Adelaide to meet up with my older brother to head to Kangaroo Island for 3 days. Despite being Adelaide boys neither of us had ever been to the island..

We based ourselves at Vivonne Bay and this would be the only time that I would not travel alone. Quite a few photos to share of Kangaroo Island and my comments about the island as a destination to come.

My first sunrise in the Flinders Ranges.

After Kangaroo Island it was time to head to the Flinders Ranges. I arrived just after sunset pretty much in the dark. Above was my first sunrise the next morning. Not a cloud in the sky and light so harsh that it would make good photos extremely difficult.

Not a cloud in sight my whole stay in the Flinders Ranges.

I got some photos in the Flinders Ranges but without a cloud in sight to diffuse the light photography was a a big flop. A good reason to go back ;)

The ride to the spot on the Mt Samuel track to take the previous photo.

With photography a fail in the Flinders Ranges due to the blue sky days, it soon became all about the riding and learning about the location for photos to be taken on future visits.

Brachina Gorge, Flinders Ranges, SA.

When I say continuous blue sky days I mean exactly like the photo above. This region has not seen rain in a long time and I did not see a cloud in the sky until I headed a fair way north on my return trip home.

My campsite at Alpana Station, Flinders ranges, SA.

It was so dry that at Alpana Station where I camped, access to the shower facilities was not available to tent campers. I will not write how many days I went without a shower for fear of reprisals from my wife. I can say however that my first campsite on the way home was in a caravan park (I really avoid caravan parks) where I could have a shower.

That said Alpana Station was a magical place to stay. I had the whole area to myself until the day I left. I highly recommend to stay there. Sally is a wonderful knowledgable host.

A very dirty bike and rider on the way back to Queensland camped outside Torrens Creek.

It is almost cliche to talk about the benefits of motor bike riding and photography for mental health….so I will not. What I will say is that you learn so much about yourself when you spend over a month living in a tent off the back of a motorbike……. on your own. I cannot wait to do it again and was planning my next trip as I rode home.
