Halls Falls, Herberton - Mother Nature created a big swimming pool
Early December 2025
Male Cotton Pygmy Goose, late November 2025
About a month ago I discovered a gaggle of Cotton Pygmy Geese in the Herberton area. The first time I spotted them I did not have my long lens. When I returned two weeks or so later armed with my long lens they were luckily still there and I managed to get some photos.

Unfortunately when I returned a third time they were gone. The Black Swans were still there but the Cotton Pygmy Geese that are soon to go into breeding season were absent.

I will do another visit over the Christmas period to see if they return. I am hoping if they are not I will be able to find them in another nearby water body.
A bit disappointed I sat down and took some photos of dragon flies and wondered what to do with the rest of the day. I had recently seen a Youtube video showing Halls Falls just outside of Herberton so I decided to go take a look for the first time.

When you make your way down the hillside you view what appears to be a naturally formed swimming pool. On this day it was extremely hot and a swim was well and truly on the cards. At the moment late in the dry season the water is trickling into the pool from the Falls before continuing down the rocky hillside.

I waited for a bit of cloud cover to soften the light and assist in bringing out the colours of the rocks for a photo. After my swim I headed back to Cairns. I look forward to taking another look after we have had some rain.
