White and Brown diamonds

1.02 carat C5 colour, Si1 clarity brilliant oval cut champagne diamond.

I love brown/champagne diamonds. They are not as popular as I would expect them to be. They come in varying shades, are quite affordable and many of them are sourced from Australia! What is not to love?

One thing to remember when viewing loose (unset) gems is that the colour often changes once set. The style of setting and colour of the precious metal used can effect this change greatly. Also often images and videos of gems are taken under optimal lighting conditions which make them appear lighter/brighter than most normal environments.

In the case of this customer she preferred slightly darker gems than she was seeing in C5 gems unset. She was sure she wanted a C6. She has been a customer for many years now and trusted what I was telling her about colour change.

I prepared a draft of the design and when some diamonds arrived for her approvaI she agreed, the C5 was just the right colour once set and the C6 would be too dark.

18ct yellow gold split band claw trellis setting.

This ring was all about the 1.02 carat gem. We kept the design quite low and simple. The lines of the trellis setting flow with the oval shape of the diamond. She loves it :)

A 3 month journey to create this ring.

Some customers find it harder to make decisions during the custom ring make process than others. This customer I think will not mind me saying that she had a lot of trouble making up her mind on all manner of design features. I started this ring back in April.

First we went back and forth between various design styles for the top view. We then had issues balancing up the pros and cons of certain side aspects of the design and how they would affect her wedding ring.

18ct palladium white gold setting.

We would repeatedly discuss/work on an aspect of the design and then I would wait weeks for a reply/decision. I keep notes on jobs but refreshing myself all the time is not optimal for how I work. I like to maintain focus on jobs.

Also every time the customer went silent she fell behind other jobs that were coming in. I warned her of this but at the same time asked her to take as long as she needed. In the end she needed 3 months in total and the ring is being picked up later today for a surprise proposal :)
