Heritage and family

9th June 2023 - Customer location: Cairns

Left side: Making the Maple leaf a more central feature.

A couple came to me wanting to do their own version of a ring design they had seen elsewhere. The design was a branch ring featuring a Maple leaf and some small diamonds.

Above to the left is our first draft of that design and to the right very similar to the original. We wanted to explore making the maple leaf a more central feature of the design.

Customer sketch, fine work!

The customers liked the change but picked up that the branch stubs were not all facing the same way. I would correct that in the next version. In the sketch they also had smoothed out the curvature of the ring across the finger. This I would also explore next.

Correction made but more changes to come.

The stubs were now all going he same way and the curvature in the ring a bit softer. The positioning of the leaf still needed to be adjusted next.

It was decided to place the leaf so that it turned out from the branch more. The customer was very happy but still wanted one more change.

Making the leaf a little longer across the finger.

Above you can see on the right that we ended up designing the leaf to be a bit longer. I was now ready to make the ring.

Making the leaf a little longer across the finger.

The ring was created in 18ct yellow gold with the Maple leaf in 18ct rose gold. The maple leaf represents the Canadian mother and the 3 diamonds the father and their two children. I really love this ring and it was so much fun to work with this couple.

Have a great weekend.
