Minimalist and Maximist

15th March 2022

Two rings to share with you today. The first is the minimalist design, a solitaire. There are many versions of a solitaire but what they all have in common is the reliance on the size of the main gem as the central feature of the ring.

For this ring a 1.01 carat round brilliant cut diamond was used as the main gem. The setting is a six claw scalloped design joined to a knife edge band. The ring was created in 18ct Palladium white gold. Very much the classic solitaire design.

The next ring is a double halo and what makes the ring all the more unusual is that all of the gems were sourced from an heirloom ring.

The unsetting of the heirloom ring.

The hardest pieces to design are those with predefined materials, they rarely all just fit together. It is so much easier to design to taste and then source the required materials. In the case of this ring it was meant to be as the diamond sizes turned out to be just right to form the two haloes around the main gem.

The new ring was made in 18ct palladium white gold and the 18ct yellow gold from the heirloom ring will be converted to 9ct yellow gold and used for the grooms wedding ring.

The great benefit of the halo is that it removes the dependence on one large expensive gemstone to create a largish size head for the ring. I find haloes polarise people, you either love them or hate them.

In the case of this ring the sentimental factor outweighs the design regardless and I love jewellery with meaning :)
