My customer sent me the above photo as a starting point for the ring. I thought that the design would look a bit nicer if we softened it up and the customer agreed. Our biggest decision was to have the head of the ring round or oval

We had some old diamonds left over from a remake of her engagement ring that she wanted to use in this ring. We decided to form a letter W on the top with them.

However to accommodate those pre defined diamond sizes the W would have to be big enough. In the end it was decided to go with a round head for the ring.

With the ring design finalised I freight bagged a sizer (shown above) to the customer in Brisbane to confirm that the size was correct and overall design layout. We did this a couple of times until the size was perfect.

Above is the finished ring created in 9ct rose gold. One of the big benefits of using 9ct gold is that it allows you to add in more copper to achieve the rose colour.

As with all the rings I make there is no thinning out of the back solely to reduce gold weight. I do it sometimes but for reasons other than to reduce gold weight just for price/profit. The ring once finished was freighted down to Brisbane knowing that both the design and finger size were exactly what she wanted. All done from thousand of kilometres away.

The colour is gone but the planes are back!

Barron Gorge 24th September 2020

Last week I had a lot of 5am starts so that I could catch up with work and also take the afternoons off in Barron Gorge and wait for the moon to rise.

As the sun gets lower and the light gets softer the colours of the Gorge truly reveal themselves. Just a stunning place to relax.

As a reminder of how quickly things can change when I visited this spot 5 days later the tree was bare. Just as quickly as the colourful leaves vanished from this tree the planes have reappeared in the skies over Cairns as travel starts to resume.

Moonrise in Barron Gorge 25th September 2020.

After the moon had risen I headed back to work which is what I am going to do now. Have a great week and will try to post another piece of jewellery soon. That will be a piece I made for a customer in Tasmania.
